Tales from the Wheelhouse (as the only girl aboard)
Commodore Sheri and crew wrangled a Santa with gift Christmas tree ornaments for the December PSCC meeting. Then she pulled out one of the most personable and enthusiastic speakers yet: USCG Master Tuuli Messer-Bookman. Tuuli was one of the first woman through the King Point U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. There was a great photo of her marching first in line, followed by the tallest in the class. Tulli was the only woman on board, a variety of ships for years, and boy did she have stories from all over the world! The ships carried all kinds of cargo; Military support, US Aid supplies like corn and tractors to places I can't pronounce. Logging more than 300,000 sea miles as a merchant marine officer, she wasn't just breaking ground for women on ships, but was a role model in ports around the world - A woman can do that? Really? It takes a crew. So with a law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law, she became a tenure full professor in the Marine Transportation Department of the California Maritime Academy, where she discovered that there were no up-to-date comprehensive texts on the subject of maritime casualties, so she wrote the book, "Maritime Casualties, Causes and Consequences". What an interesting evening, another fine PSCC meeting!
